From Fossils to Field Guides: Why We Partner with Atlas Screen Printing
Sometimes the products we bring to Nature’s Materials start with a search for the shop. Other times, they start much closer to home.
Our introduction to Atlas Screen Printing started with my daughter.
She wants to be a paleontologist, and I was looking for a T-shirt that reflected her love of fossils and prehistoric life. I did not want something overly cartoonish or simply a dinosaur printed across the front. I wanted something that actually showed the fascinating things she loves learning about.
That search led me to Atlas Screen Printing and their WILD COTTON® Fossils Guide shirt.
The first thing that caught my attention was the artwork. The shirt is covered with detailed illustrations of fossils, including trilobites, ammonites, fossilized plants, teeth, shells, and other specimens. It looked less like a typical graphic T-shirt and more like a page pulled from a natural history guide.
Then I saw that the shirt was 100% cotton, and after learning more about Atlas Screen Printing and their long history of creating nature and educational designs, I decided we needed to try one.
So I ordered one for my daughter.
From Our Family to Nature’s Materials
When the shirt arrived, I was impressed.
The quality of the shirt was wonderful, but it was the printing and illustrations that really stood out. There is so much detail packed into the design. It is the kind of shirt you can look at repeatedly and still notice something you missed before.
More importantly, my daughter loved it and it quickly became one of her favorite T-shirts.
That is usually a pretty good sign around here.
And it made me start looking at the rest of the Atlas collection differently. If this was something we genuinely enjoyed in our own family, could it also be something our Nature’s Materials customers would enjoy?
The answer was an easy yes.
A Field Guide You Can Wear
One of our favorite things about these shirts is that they are more than clothing.
We think of them as field guides you can wear.
Many of the designs bring together beautifully illustrated and labeled specimens around a particular subject. Instead of simply showing a picture of a fossil, bird, insect, plant, or animal, the artwork invites you to look closer and identify what you are seeing.
The Fossils Guide shirt, for example, introduces the wearer to a collection of fossils and evidence of ancient life.
The It’s in My Nature design takes a different approach, bringing together an incredible assortment of familiar wildlife and plants. There are birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, trees, fungi, and other organisms to discover.
A child might recognize the white-tailed deer immediately but have to look more closely at a cecropia moth, five-lined skink, spring peeper, or bracken fern.
And that is where we think these shirts become especially interesting.
Learning Without Turning It Into a Lesson
At Nature’s Materials, we love products that encourage curiosity without requiring an adult to turn every experience into a formal lesson. A child does not need to sit down and study the shirt. They can simply wear it.
Maybe they recognize something. Maybe they ask what something is. Maybe they spot an animal on a hike and later realize it is pictured on their shirt. Maybe a trip to a natural history museum suddenly becomes a scavenger hunt to find specimens they recognize. Those small connections matter.
The illustrations can naturally encourage observation, identification, vocabulary, classification, and conversation. They can also provide a starting point for deeper exploration when a particular specimen captures someone's interest.
And because all of that is happening on a T-shirt, it does not necessarily feel like an educational activity.
It is simply curiosity doing what curiosity does best: leading us toward the next question.
Why We Chose Atlas Screen Printing
Of course, educational value alone is not enough for us to bring a product into Nature’s Materials.
We also want products that are well made and enjoyable to use.
Our experience with that very first fossil shirt gave us confidence in the quality of the Atlas products. We loved the detailed artwork, the quality of the screen printing, the 100% cotton construction of the shirts we selected, and the way the designs combine science, nature, and art.
There is also something refreshingly different about them.
They are educational without looking like "educational clothing." They are interesting enough for a child who already loves a subject, but approachable enough to spark curiosity in someone who does not know much about it yet.

Our partnership with Atlas Screen Printing really began with one fossil-loving kid and one T-shirt. There was no elaborate product-sourcing strategy behind it. I found something for my daughter, ordered it, saw the quality for myself, and watched it become something she genuinely loved.
Naturally, I wanted to share that discovery with our customers. That is how many of our favorite Nature’s Materials products find their way into the shop: we discover something that encourages curiosity, experience it ourselves, and realize it deserves to be shared.
Because sometimes the best learning materials do not look like learning materials at all.
